Throwback Thursday!

Today's Throwback is Weird Science.

The 80s had some classic movies and alot of what you'll remember is from John Hughes. Pretty In Pink, and Some Kind of Wonderful? Those romantic comedies? Weird Science isn't that.

"They went from zeros to heros in one fantastic weekend"

The movie stars Anthony Michael Hall and Ilan Mitchell-Smith as "nerdy" friends, Gary and Wyatt. Tired of dealing with the typical teenage social issues for years, they decide to create the perfect woman who they hope can change their social standing (Can't Buy Me Love anyone?) When she appears in the flesh, the real fun begins. Lisa (Kelly LeBrock) becomes their genie in a bottle and can get them anything they need. Cool clothes, fake IDs, a Porsche. When they show up with her at the mall, the cool guys from school (ENTER, RDJ!) can't believe what they're seeing. Lisa makes them look the cool guys and against their better judgement, plans a party which fills the house. Some WEIRD stuff goes down (that you'll have to watch) but in the end, she succeeds in changing their lives and teaching them a few lessons.

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see. Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub...

As You Wish

I’ve been feeling kind of crappy lately and I thought to myself, “There’s only one movie that can pick me up right now.” Though I didn’t have a grandfather to take care of me and read me stories when I was sick, there’s still something about watching The Princess Bride when you’re not feeling up to par. That combined with the fact that the interwebs are buzzing about The Princess Bride heading to Broadway made this a perfect Throwback for this week. I remember when I was in the fifth grade we would, on occasion, have a “movie day” on Friday. I convinced everyone that there was this great movie we NEEDED to watch. I knew it line for line. (Sadly, I forgot about the “I want my father back you SOB” line until it was right upon us and had to jump up to fast-forward it…oops.) I don’t know if any of my friends remember watching it then. Maybe a Matthew Broderick Throwback Series?

Last Friday night while scanning Netflix for a throwback from my list to rewatch, I found a great 80s classic with Matthew Broderick. BEFORE his memorable role as Ferris Bueller, he starred as a computer genius named David in War Games. War Games takes place in the 80s during the Cold War. After a failed launch exercise (featuring Mr. Blonde, Michael Madsen ) the US government is convinced that they should give control of the nuclear program to a computer. That is, until it's hacked by a high school kid. When David (Broderick) successfully accesses this super-computer, he's trying to get into the computer of a software company to play their latest game before it's released. He unknowingly begins a showdown between the US and Russia that could lead to World War III if he doesn't help stop it.
