HEY YOU GUYS!

Have you ever done those online quizzes to find out which movie character you are? They ask you a question, give you several options for your answer and you're thinking, "BUT...BUT...BUT...I LOVE THEM ALL!" That's about what it's like when I try to pick a blog topic. Sometimes I swear it takes me more time to decide on what I'd like to write about, than it does to actually do the writing. I was actually doing one of those quizzes the other day and it asked me to pick between several movies. Most of them were lost on me...what I like to call the "stupid college boy humor" flicks, or the bad romantic comedies. However, there were two that I loved and I had a difficult time picking one over the other. It came down to Goonies and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Ultimately, I chose Last Crusade. It was a tough call, especially since they both had that treasure hunt type element, but it made me think how I need to watch The Goonies again. (Tell us in the comments which movie you would have chosen.)

I remember watching Goonies and playing the Nintendo game as a kid. When I was fifteen or sixteen, it seemed to get really popular again. There were shirts, stickers, and buttons everywhere. I think it was a dream for every young person. Who didn't want to go on adventures, outwit the bad guys, and basically go on the coolest treasure hunt ever? Growing up, I had a thing for piracy and treasure hunting.  I'd like to believe that most kids do. Then, when the movie exploded again, I could appreciate that it was more than an adventure; it was The Breakfast Club meets Treasure Island. I think that's part of what made this movie so great. It wasn't adults on this adventure, it was young people like me with braces and asthma.

We find a group of outsiders who are being forced to leave their homes the following day. They find an old treasure map and key in the attic that starts them on a search for treasure, but the group ends up running into the Fratellis (a mother, her two sons, and the third brother who is a hunchback type creature that they keep locked in the basement). Add in some chase scenes, booby traps, and pirate ships, and a few cuss words and you've basically got the plot. In my mind, this is a timeless classic. There will always be kids feeling like outsiders who want to do something adventurous and important with their lives. If you haven't watched this movie for a while, do yourself a favor and revisit it. You won't regret it. I mean, I'm pretty sure it's one of the most quoted movies ever (after Princess Bride, of course).

Don't forget to comment and tell us which movie you would have chosen, and what your favorite Goonies memories are.

Goonies is rated PG and runs 114 minutes. Rotten Tomatoes gives this one a 67%, while the general "audience" rating keeps it higher at a 91%.

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see.   Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub...

Thundercats, HOOOOOOO!

I miss Thundercats. That was a quality Saturday morning cartoon. It ran from 1985-1989. Yes, that hit me at ages 1-5, but I enjoyed watching it then and reruns later on. My brother had some pretty sweet Lion-o and Snarf figurines. The occupants of Thundera evacuate before the planet and all but one of the escape ships were destroyed. The Thundercats were all that remained and they set a course for Third Earth where they crash. With the help of his "Sword of Omens", Lion-o gives the Thundercats a chance against Mumm-Ra and the evil mutants. This cartoon was so freaking cool that it has been referenced in all sorts of pop culture avenues. The Band Reliant K has a song called I'm Lion-o , which is such a fun song to jam to. If you were a fan of Homestar Runner and Strong Bad Emails, Thundercats is referenced in Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 5: 8 Bit Is Enough . The series was rebooted in 2011 and was a combination of anime and western ani...

Heroes in a Half Shell

A couple weeks ago, before stuff started showing up on the internet about the new Michael Bay movie, I decided to watch the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie with my boys. So, here's the jist of the story. Four tiny turtles begin a huge transformation after coming in contact with a mysterious green ooze. A rat who was once the pet of a great ninja master "adopts" them and teaches them the way of the ninja. While the turtles are studying in the sewers, there is a crime wave blanketing the city above. Robberies are on the rise and TV reporter April O'Neil finds herself a one of the latest victims. Unexpectedly, the streetlamp goes out....and when it goes back on, she's sitting next to a tied up pile of her attackers! Leave it to a reporter to get to the bottom of the story! April finds that behind this crime ring is the Foot Clan, led by the evil Shredder and he's not happy that she's onto him and he sends his henchmen to take care of ...
