It's Throwback Thursday!

File:Flash gordon movie poster.jpg

Today's throwback is FLASH GORDON! Not the comic book or the TV series...the movie from 1980! This movie is a favorite of my youth(no matter how much the reviewers hated it). Let me give you a quick synopsis.

An evil alien Emperor(Ming) is bent on destroying Earth....A hot quarterback(Flash) and a reporter(Dale) find themselves on Ming's planet and have to save Earth. The End.

Well, really that is it, in a nutshell. But, I suppose I have to give you something else to go on...through a series of unfortunate events, Flash and Dale crash land on Mongo (Ming's planet) and get captured. Ming decides he wants Dale, Flash doesn't like it....and the first big "fight" scene begins. He loses, is sent to be executed, and instead gets saved by Ming's daughter Aura, who thinks he's pretty fine. She takes him to her boyfriend, Barin(Timothy Dalton), and asks that he keep him safe. Seriously? How is that a good plan?

Somehow, they all find themselves in Sky City where the Hawkmen force Barin and Flash to fight to the death. When Flash spares Barin, they become allies against Ming.

Flash (ha ha) forward, Ming in the process of marrying Dale (against her will)...Flash, Barin and the Hawkmen race to Mongo to stop Ming from destroying the Earth. Flash is riding a rocket bike, Queen music is pulsing....yes, I said Queen. This alone is a reason to watch this movie. The soundtrack is...AWE-SOME! And don't even get me started on the costuming!
But I'm going to stop there, you'll just have to watch it and find the rest out for yourselves.

Man I love this movie.

Thundercats, HOOOOOOO!

I miss Thundercats. That was a quality Saturday morning cartoon. It ran from 1985-1989. Yes, that hit me at ages 1-5, but I enjoyed watching it then and reruns later on. My brother had some pretty sweet Lion-o and Snarf figurines. The occupants of Thundera evacuate before the planet and all but one of the escape ships were destroyed. The Thundercats were all that remained and they set a course for Third Earth where they crash. With the help of his "Sword of Omens", Lion-o gives the Thundercats a chance against Mumm-Ra and the evil mutants. This cartoon was so freaking cool that it has been referenced in all sorts of pop culture avenues. The Band Reliant K has a song called I'm Lion-o , which is such a fun song to jam to. If you were a fan of Homestar Runner and Strong Bad Emails, Thundercats is referenced in Strong Bad's Cool Game for Attractive People Episode 5: 8 Bit Is Enough . The series was rebooted in 2011 and was a combination of anime and western ani...

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see.   Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub...

It's Throwback Thursday Time!

This week for Throwback Thursday, I'm taking you to camp...Space Camp. I grew up watching this movie and I love rewatching it every once in a while just to reminisce.  Since I only ever went to church camp, it's kind of fun to see a bunch of nerdy kids getting to go to camp together. The movie never really got great reviews. In fact, they usually stayed around the area of about 40-50% approval. I think part of that had to do with the Challenger space shuttle catastrophe of 1986. Unfortunately, the tragedy didn't end as well as the movie. The release date was pushed back several months due to that, but even when released, the public didn't respond well to the reminder of the events. All things considered, I think it's still a great geek movie. Lea Thompson, Kelly Preston, Joaquin Phoenix (then known as Leaf) Kate Capshaw, Tom Skerrit, Tate Donovan and Larry B. Scott are the lead characters in this movie. Andie, a NASA astronaut who has never actually been in spac...
