TBT-Big Trouble in Little China

Today's post will be quick since I'm a bit under the weather. I require a nap.

So, with that...and a question...Any of you remember when Kurt Russell was Disney's Golden Boy? Before he became a big action star? I'm pretty sure Big Trouble in Little China was one of the movies that kicked off his career as an action hero.

Released in 1986 and directed by John Carpenter. Kurt Russell plays Jack Burton, a truck driver who makes a stop in San Francisco's Chinatown when things get interesting. Kim Catrall plays Jack's fiesty love interest, Gracie Law. (I heart when she walks in the door and announces, "Don't panic, it's only me, Gracie Law!" Really?) The evil Lo Pan is played by James Hong, who's been making appearances at the Wizard World conventions recently.

Jack takes his friend Wang to the airport to pick up his fiancee Miao Yin, when a gang kidnaps her. They chase after the gang, but get stuck in the middle of a gang war that's quickly stopped by three guys (called the The Three Storms) who drop from the sky. Jack doesn't understand the unusual things he's seen but Wang quickly tells him of the stories he was told as a child. They learn that Lo Pan was cursed centuries ago and he needs a green-eyed girl to break his curse. The group must fight with magic and martial arts to save the day.

While digging up character info on this movie, I read an interesting tidbit. It seems that the preview had really great results but didn't do so well in the theaters. After it came out on video, it really developed a cult following. I also discovered a post from yesterday about Big Trouble in Little China being developed into a Graphic Novel.

Big Trouble in Little China has a great mix of crazy characters, action, and entertaining dialog. "Okay. You people sit tight, hold down the fort and keep the home fires burning. And if we're not back by dawn... call the president." You can find it on Amazon and streaming on Netflix. And RedBubble has some excellent T Shirts commemorating the movie! You can even get one just like Jack's!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to take a nap...and then I'm going to watch this movie again...without taking notes. -Graphics Girl

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see.   Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub

Maybe a Matthew Broderick Throwback Series?

Last Friday night while scanning Netflix for a throwback from my list to rewatch, I found a great 80s classic with Matthew Broderick.  BEFORE his memorable role as Ferris Bueller, he starred as a computer genius named David in War Games. War Games takes place in the 80s during the Cold War. After a failed launch exercise (featuring Mr. Blonde, Michael Madsen ) the US government is convinced that they should give control of the nuclear program to a computer. That is, until it's hacked by a high school kid. When David (Broderick) successfully accesses this super-computer, he's trying to get into the computer of a software company to play their latest game before it's released. He unknowingly begins a showdown between the US and Russia that could lead to World War III if he doesn't help stop it.  I am not going to go into what happens....just in case you haven't seen it or it's been a while for you. (I'd like to know what you guys think....in the futu

As You Wish

I’ve been feeling kind of crappy lately and I thought to myself, “There’s only one movie that can pick me up right now.”   Though I didn’t have a grandfather to take care of me and read me stories when I was sick, there’s still something about watching The Princess Bride when you’re not feeling up to par.   That combined with the fact that the interwebs are buzzing about The Princess Bride heading to Broadway made this a perfect Throwback for this week. I remember when I was in the fifth grade we would, on occasion, have a “movie day” on Friday.   I convinced everyone that there was this great movie we NEEDED to watch.   I knew it line for line.   (Sadly, I forgot about the “I want my father back you SOB” line until it was right upon us and had to jump up to fast-forward it…oops.)   I don’t know if any of my friends remember watching it then.   It seems like it has a much bigger following these days, but that could just be because I was 9 and didn’t know any b
