Wizard World Mid Ohio Coverage

Graphics Girl and I went to Mid Ohio Comic Con on the 20th-22nd.  Though it's one of the smaller Wizard World conventions, there was plenty to see and do. And our PSA....Folks, if Wizard World comes to a town near you...BUY YOURSELF A TICKET AND GO!

FRIDAY, MEETING NEW PEOPLE
On Friday we checked out a lot of the vendors and went to some panels.  We caught the Cosplay panel that day and ended up getting to know Eric "The Smoke" Moran, Michael Knightmage Wilson and Damian Beurer.  They are all great cosplayers and all great guys in general.

That evening, we didn't really have a place to stay, so after the convention was over, we found a quite corner and sat on the phone with Travelocity for an hour. YAY!  The first two times I booked a room online, it went ahead and took my money, but when I finally got to the confirmation part of booking, the site told me that the room had been sold.  That was all before the hour speaking with a woman who basically took me through the same exact thing multiple times.  I started getting really frustrated, but I'm pretty sure Graphics Girl found it entertaining.

On the way there, the GPS took us on a wild goose chase.  First stop, an abandoned lot.  We figured the place was going to be shady, but as least there might be lights on.  When we finally DID get to the "hotel", it was pretty skeezy. The outside doors that normally require a keycard to get in were propped open with a big rock. The scent of moisture and mildew wafted through the halls.  When we got to our room, the door to the adjoining room was unlocked. This leads one to think, "Don't be surprised if you get attacked in your sleep." Finally, I had to lift the mattress. No sign of bedbugs, so at least we were safe there. EWWW!  We wrapped our days adventure with a late dinner (which most indivduals would have only eaten after a lot of drinking) while we recorded a bit of video footage and recounted our day.

SATURDAY COSPLAY
Saturday morning I ended up deciding to cosplay.  I figured if I was going to get myself Stan Lee's autograph, I needed to be dressed as one of his characters.  I threw everything together and went to check out...the guy at the counter seriously asked me what I was up to that day. "Oh nothin. Just thought I'd throw this outfit on to do some grocery shoppin." Really?  Anyway, when we got to the con we went straight to the Stan Lee booth, purchased our signature voucher and then got in line.  Stan Lee was ADORABLE.  I kept repeating that I just wanted to squeeze him.  I don't think that was included with my ticket, but a girl can dream.  He finally looked up from signing and did a double take.  It was funny to see the look of surprise on his face.  He complimented my costume and then we were shooed out of line.

After Stan, we went to get an early spot for the Doctor Who panel and found ourselves able to sit in the last 10 minutes or so of the Firefly panel.  Summer Glau is just one of the cutest people ever.  She and Ron Glass were just so enjoyable to listen to. Summer told us that Ron's laugh felt like being tickled by angels! We had about an hour to run back for a last run through of the vendors before we needed to head out so that I could make it home for a singing engagement.  That's when everything went crazy.

I stopped by "Smoke's" booth so that we could get some photos together on the stage. And after, I was grabbed by a super cute girl dressed as a dark haired Black Widow. She pulled me to her booth, announcing, "I found one!" The guys at her booth, (from uCreateComics) asked me to come back and work with them the next day.  We chatted about the details, I told them I'd think about it and but we really had to run. On the way out, we ran into Damian Beuer, who asked if I could come back the next day and do an episode of Cospladies.  He had his guy take some video footage at that time and Graphics Girl and I literally RAN for the door.  We had quite a few things to talk over while we drove home.

SUNDAY FUNDAY!
Early Sunday morning we decided to make the drive back to Columbus once again.  I was able to work the booth with the team from uCreate Comics and Graphics Girl was able to check out the con with HER boys.  It was their first convention and they really enjoyed themselves.  I wasn't able to make the whole Cospladies interview work out, since I just couldn't get away from the booth, but I'm hoping we can do that at another time.  I was, however, able to glean some wisdom from Don and Doug of uCreate Comics and I had a really nice lunch with Don, who told me a lot about the cool stuff he's gotten into over the years.  It's been so great to meet so many new friends who do so many cool things in this industry.  The ride home was spent catching up and comparing our experiences for the day.  The boys got to show me all of their swag and tell me about all the cosplayers and celebrities they saw. And the laughing...

It's pretty exciting to be a part of someone's first convention.  Last time it was Graphics Girl and this time it was her boys.  Thank you to all of our new friends who helped make all of this excitement possible.  We've been able to see and learn so much in such a short amount of time, none of which would have been possible without you guys!

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see.   Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub

Maybe a Matthew Broderick Throwback Series?

Last Friday night while scanning Netflix for a throwback from my list to rewatch, I found a great 80s classic with Matthew Broderick.  BEFORE his memorable role as Ferris Bueller, he starred as a computer genius named David in War Games. War Games takes place in the 80s during the Cold War. After a failed launch exercise (featuring Mr. Blonde, Michael Madsen ) the US government is convinced that they should give control of the nuclear program to a computer. That is, until it's hacked by a high school kid. When David (Broderick) successfully accesses this super-computer, he's trying to get into the computer of a software company to play their latest game before it's released. He unknowingly begins a showdown between the US and Russia that could lead to World War III if he doesn't help stop it.  I am not going to go into what happens....just in case you haven't seen it or it's been a while for you. (I'd like to know what you guys think....in the futu

As You Wish

I’ve been feeling kind of crappy lately and I thought to myself, “There’s only one movie that can pick me up right now.”   Though I didn’t have a grandfather to take care of me and read me stories when I was sick, there’s still something about watching The Princess Bride when you’re not feeling up to par.   That combined with the fact that the interwebs are buzzing about The Princess Bride heading to Broadway made this a perfect Throwback for this week. I remember when I was in the fifth grade we would, on occasion, have a “movie day” on Friday.   I convinced everyone that there was this great movie we NEEDED to watch.   I knew it line for line.   (Sadly, I forgot about the “I want my father back you SOB” line until it was right upon us and had to jump up to fast-forward it…oops.)   I don’t know if any of my friends remember watching it then.   It seems like it has a much bigger following these days, but that could just be because I was 9 and didn’t know any b
