We made it to Friday!

We made it! It's Friday! You know what that means: It's time for another Fangirl Favorite.

This week I thought it would be cool to talk about some new friends that we met in Chicago. We met so many great people that it's difficult to just choose one or two, but we've seen these guys in various articles in Huffington Post and Nerdist News lately, so it seemed appropriate to continue the praise for them. I'm talking about the extremely talented and super sweet guys over at Aw Yeah Comics.

Aw Yeah was founded by Franco Aureliani, Art Baltazar, and Marc Hammond. If you're in the Chicago area, you really need to go and visit their store in downtown Skokie. They have a family friendly environment that helps bring all kinds of people into the world of comics. The guys host all kinds of nifty events like tomorrow's Dark Horse Day and an Aw Yeah Lounge Party (which I totally wish I could attend), and Chat and Chew on Sundays...I mean, this is no ordinary comic book store where you just go in and browse the merchandise.

I think what I love the most about these guys is that they don't take themselves too seriously. They own a business, but they seem to really LOVE what they do and they want to show kids the wonderful world of comics. Come on...they use crayons to color their stuff...how great is that? I feel like we're all pressured to grow up, and in this day and age especially, kids lose that sense of innocence and fun even earlier. These guys are helping to preserve that and reminding us that just because we get older, it doesn't mean that we have to lose those awesome qualities. The Black Cat commissions they did for me in Chicago will forever be two of my favorite pieces just because they're adorable and FUN!

I can't forget to mention, the new Itty Bitty Hellboy just came out on August 28th, and it looks completely adorable. I'm sure most of you are familiar with Hellboy, but this is a version you may not have seen before. Mike Mignola (who created Hellboy for Dark Horse Comics) wanted something at his table that was kid friendly, so he approached Art Baltazar and Franco about doing a mini-series for the younger audiences. Thus, Itty Bitty Hellboy was born...and he's soooo cute. :)

Avengers

This week's Throwback doesn't go back all that far. It takes us to the days when Avengers was filming in Cleveland. My sister was fortunate to spot Joss Whedon downtown one day, and shortly thereafter, we decided to head to Cleveland to see what we could see.   Most of the filming didn't start until evening, so we got there around 7 or 8pm. Everything was blocked off and there were so many people standing around trying to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Thankfully, most of those people weren't in it for the long haul. Graphics Girl and I ended up sitting there until everyone else had gone and all the drunkards came stumbling out of all the local bars. It was so much fun to see everything happening. We were watching the filming of everything happening outside of the opera house and biergarten. We were able to see a bit of Chris Evans (who was under heavy guard and had to wear a big cape until he was actually shooting), and LOTS of Tom Hiddleston and his body doub

Maybe a Matthew Broderick Throwback Series?

Last Friday night while scanning Netflix for a throwback from my list to rewatch, I found a great 80s classic with Matthew Broderick.  BEFORE his memorable role as Ferris Bueller, he starred as a computer genius named David in War Games. War Games takes place in the 80s during the Cold War. After a failed launch exercise (featuring Mr. Blonde, Michael Madsen ) the US government is convinced that they should give control of the nuclear program to a computer. That is, until it's hacked by a high school kid. When David (Broderick) successfully accesses this super-computer, he's trying to get into the computer of a software company to play their latest game before it's released. He unknowingly begins a showdown between the US and Russia that could lead to World War III if he doesn't help stop it.  I am not going to go into what happens....just in case you haven't seen it or it's been a while for you. (I'd like to know what you guys think....in the futu

As You Wish

I’ve been feeling kind of crappy lately and I thought to myself, “There’s only one movie that can pick me up right now.”   Though I didn’t have a grandfather to take care of me and read me stories when I was sick, there’s still something about watching The Princess Bride when you’re not feeling up to par.   That combined with the fact that the interwebs are buzzing about The Princess Bride heading to Broadway made this a perfect Throwback for this week. I remember when I was in the fifth grade we would, on occasion, have a “movie day” on Friday.   I convinced everyone that there was this great movie we NEEDED to watch.   I knew it line for line.   (Sadly, I forgot about the “I want my father back you SOB” line until it was right upon us and had to jump up to fast-forward it…oops.)   I don’t know if any of my friends remember watching it then.   It seems like it has a much bigger following these days, but that could just be because I was 9 and didn’t know any b
